Introduction

The Nine of Wands is a card of resilience, fatigue, and quiet persistence.

Something has already required effort. Repeated effort. The kind that doesn’t just test your strength, but your patience, your trust, and your willingness to keep going.

This card often appears when someone feels:

  • tired
  • guarded
  • unsure whether to continue or pull back

But despite all of that… they haven’t walked away.

In these exercises, you’ll work with situations where your client is not at the beginning, and not at the end — but in that in-between space where continuing feels heavy, but stopping doesn’t feel right either.

Your role as a reader is to help them understand:
👉 what they’ve already endured
👉 what they’re protecting
👉 and whether their persistence still serves them

Exercise 1

📝 Fictional client email:

Hi,

I feel a bit stuck, and honestly… just tired.

I’ve been in this on-and-off situation with someone for quite a while now. It’s not toxic exactly, but it’s also never been stable.

Every time things seem to settle, something shifts again. Distance, timing, misunderstandings — it’s always something.

And I’ve stayed. I’ve tried to be patient, to give it space, to not overreact.

But lately, I’ve noticed that I’m not showing up the same way anymore.

I’m more guarded. I hold back more. I don’t fully trust it, even when things are going well.

Part of me still cares. A lot, actually.

But another part of me is wondering how many times something can “almost work” before it just… isn’t meant to.

I don’t know if I’m being strong by staying, or just tired of letting go.

So I guess my question is… is this something worth holding onto, or am I just holding on out of habit at this point?

– Sarah

💬 Let’s look at what’s happening here:

Sarah isn’t confused about what’s happening.

She’s worn down by it.

This is not the beginning of a situation — this is the result of repeated cycles.

The Nine of Wands often appears when someone has already:
👉 tried
👉 adjusted
👉 stayed longer than they originally planned

As a reader, your role is not to immediately tell her to stay or leave.

It’s to help her understand:
👉 what her current state actually reflects
👉 and whether this persistence is still coming from strength… or from exhaustion

🎯 Your Exercise:

For this reading, you draw The Nine of Wands.

Write your response to Sarah as if you were answering her professionally.

  • Acknowledge her exhaustion without dramatizing it
  • Help her understand what this “guarded” state means
  • Don’t rush her into a decision, but don’t avoid the core question

When you’re ready, compare your answer to mine.

Exercise 1.2

Now we deepen Sarah’s situation.

This time, the cards are:

The Nine of Wands + The Devil + The Four of Cups

Explore:

  • What keeps her tied to this situation?
  • Where does emotional fatigue show up most clearly?
  • Why does it feel hard to walk away, even when she’s tired?

Write your answer, then compare it to mine.

Exercise 2

📧 Fictional Client Email — Marcus

Hi,

I’m not sure how to explain this without sounding negative, but I’ve reached a point where everything feels like effort.

I’ve been working toward a goal for a long time — building something for myself professionally.

I’ve made progress, I can see that. But it hasn’t been smooth.

There have been setbacks, delays, things not working out the way I expected. And every time I adjust and keep going.

But lately, I’ve noticed that I don’t feel the same drive anymore.

I still show up, I still do what I need to do, but it feels heavier than it used to.

I don’t know if this is just part of the process… or if it’s a sign that I’ve pushed myself too far and need to step back.

I don’t want to give up on something I’ve invested so much into.

But I also don’t want to keep forcing something if I’m running out of energy.

So I guess my question is: is this a phase I need to push through, or is this a point where I need to reconsider things?

– Marcus

💬 Looking at the Bigger Picture

Marcus is not failing.

He’s fatigued.

The Nine of Wands often appears in long-term efforts where:
👉 progress exists
👉 but energy is running low

As a reader, your role is to help him understand:
👉 what this fatigue actually means
👉 and whether it’s a signal to stop… or to adjust

🎯 Your Exercise:

You draw The Nine of Wands for Marcus.

Write a response that:

  • acknowledges his effort and progress
  • addresses his exhaustion without turning it into defeat
  • helps him understand what kind of phase this is

Then compare it to my answer.

Exercise 2.2

Now we expand Marcus’s reading:

The Nine of Wands + The Strength card + The Ten of Pentacles

Explore:

  • What kind of resilience is required here?
  • What is he building toward long-term?
  • How does he continue without burning out?

Write your answer, then compare it.

Closing the Nine of Wands Exercises

The Nine of Wands reminds us that resilience has a cost.

These exercises show how often people reach a point where they are still standing — but no longer untouched by the effort it took to get there.

As a reader, your role is to help them understand whether their persistence is still serving them — and how to move forward without losing themselves in the process.
