Introduction
The Eight of Swords is a card of restriction, limitation, and perceived lack of control.
It often appears when someone feels:
- stuck
- unable to act
- or controlled by circumstances they believe they cannot change
But what makes this card unique is that the limitation is rarely as absolute as it feels.
There is:
- hesitation
- fear of consequences
- or a belief that action is not possible
In these exercises, you’ll work with situations where your client feels trapped — not necessarily because they are fully constrained, but because they cannot yet see a way out.
Your role as a reader is to help them:
👉 understand what is actually limiting them
👉 recognize where their power still exists
👉 and see possibilities without forcing unrealistic action
Exercise 1
📝 Fictional client email:
Hi,
I feel like I’m stuck in a situation that I don’t know how to get out of.
I’ve been dealing with something for a while now, and no matter how much I think about it, I keep coming back to the same conclusion: I don’t really have a choice.
There are too many factors involved.
Other people, expectations, consequences… it feels like every option I consider leads to something I don’t want to deal with.
So instead, I stay where I am.
Not because I want to — but because it feels like the least complicated option.
But the longer I stay, the more it feels like I’m not moving at all.
And that’s starting to weigh on me.
I don’t know if I’m actually stuck… or if I’ve just convinced myself that I am.
So I guess my question is: is there actually a way out of this, or am I right in thinking I don’t have many options here?
– Nadia
💬 Let’s look at what’s happening here:
Nadia is not lacking options.
She’s overwhelmed by the consequences of them.
The Eight of Swords often appears when:
👉 every option feels difficult
👉 so no option is chosen
As a reader, your role is not to tell her “you’re free, just leave.”
It’s to help her understand:
👉 what makes the situation feel so restricted
👉 and where her perception may be narrowing her view
🎯 Your Exercise:
For this reading, you draw The Eight of Swords.
Write your response to Nadia as if you were answering her professionally.
- Acknowledge the feeling of being stuck
- Help her understand what is creating that feeling
- Show possibility without dismissing the complexity
When you’re ready, compare your answer to mine.

Exercise 1.2
Now we deepen Nadia’s situation.
This time, the cards are:
The Eight of Swords + The Devil + The Two of Swords
Explore:
- What keeps her in place most strongly?
- Where does fear or attachment play a role?
- Why does she remain in indecision?
Write your answer, then compare it to mine.

Exercise 2
📧 Fictional Client Email — Oliver
Hi,
I’ve been dealing with something at work that’s starting to affect how I see myself, and I’m not sure how to handle it.
I’ve been in my position for a while, and I feel like I should be doing better than I am.
There are expectations — from my team, from management, but also from myself.
And lately, I’ve started to feel like I’m not meeting them.
It’s not that I’m failing in a clear, measurable way.
It’s more like a constant feeling that I’m not quite where I should be.
Because of that, I’ve started holding back.
I hesitate more, second-guess my decisions, and avoid taking initiative in situations where I’m not completely sure of the outcome.
And I can see how that probably makes things worse.
But I don’t know how to break out of that pattern.
So I guess my question is: is this something I can actually change, or am I just stuck in a situation that doesn’t fit me?
– Oliver
💬 Looking at the Bigger Picture
Oliver is not blocked by his environment.
He’s blocked by his own perception of it.
The Eight of Swords often appears when:
👉 self-doubt limits action
👉 which then reinforces the feeling of being stuck
As a reader, your role is to help him understand:
👉 where the cycle comes from
👉 and how awareness changes it
🎯 Your Exercise:
You draw The Eight of Swords for Oliver.
Write a response that:
- acknowledges his experience without reinforcing his doubt
- helps him understand the pattern he’s in
- shows where change becomes possible
Then compare it to my answer.

Exercise 2.2
Now we expand Oliver’s reading:
The Eight of Swords + The Magician + The Knight of Pentacles
Explore:
- Where does his actual capability lie?
- How does he regain a sense of control?
- What kind of action helps him move forward?
Write your answer, then compare it.

Closing the Eight of Swords Exercises
The Eight of Swords reminds us that feeling trapped and being trapped are not always the same thing.
These exercises show how often people experience limitation not because there are no options — but because the options available don’t feel easy or safe.
As a reader, your role is to help them see beyond that perception — without dismissing the weight of what they’re experiencing.
