Seven of Wands: Practical Tarot Exercises

Introduction

The Seven of Wands is a card of resistance, pressure, and standing your ground.

Something has already been achieved, claimed, or established — but now it’s being challenged. Not necessarily in a dramatic, obvious way, but through ongoing tension, expectations, or subtle opposition.

This card often appears when someone feels:

  • questioned
  • tested
  • or pushed to justify their position

Sometimes the pressure comes from others.
Sometimes it comes from within.

In these exercises, you’ll work with situations where your client is not trying to get something — they’re trying to keep it, protect it, or stay aligned with it.

Your role as a reader is to help them understand:
👉 what they’re standing on
👉 what they’re up against
👉 and whether their position is worth holding

Exercise 1

📝 Fictional client email:

Hi,

I’m in a situation right now that’s starting to wear me down, even though I thought I was doing the right thing.

I’ve been seeing someone for a few months, and things between us are actually good. We get along, we’re consistent, and I feel like we’re building something real.

The problem is… people around me don’t seem to support it.

Friends keep making comments, questioning my choices, pointing out small things about this person that they think are “red flags.” Even my family has started asking if I’m sure about this.

At first, I brushed it off. But the more it happens, the more it gets into my head.

Now I’m second-guessing things I didn’t question before.

I don’t know if I’m ignoring something important… or if I’m letting other people’s opinions affect something that was actually fine.

I feel like I’m constantly defending this relationship, even though I don’t fully understand why.

So I guess my question is… am I holding onto something that deserves it, or am I just being stubborn?

– Lea

💬 Let’s look at what’s happening here:

Lea is not describing a failing relationship.

She’s describing external pressure.

The Seven of Wands often appears when something is already working — but is being challenged by outside voices, expectations, or opinions.

As a reader, your role is not to automatically validate or dismiss those voices — but to help her understand:
👉 what she actually stands on
👉 and whether this position is truly hers

🎯 Your Exercise:

For this reading, you draw The Seven of Wands.

Write your response to Lea as if you were answering her professionally.

  • Acknowledge the pressure she’s experiencing
  • Help her separate her own experience from others’ opinions
  • Don’t dismiss concerns, but don’t let them take over the reading

When you’re ready, compare your answer to mine.

Exercise 1.2

Now we deepen Lea’s situation.

This time, the cards are:

The Seven of Wands + The Five of Pentacles + The Queen of Swords

Explore:

  • Why does the pressure affect her so strongly?
  • Where does vulnerability come in?
  • How does she set clearer boundaries?

Write your answer, then compare it to mine.

Exercise 2

📧 Fictional Client Email — David

Hi,

I’ve been working toward something for a long time, and I’m finally in a position where it’s starting to become real.

But instead of feeling secure in it, I feel like I’m constantly being tested.

At work, I’ve taken on more responsibility, and I can tell that people are watching me more closely now. Some are supportive, but others seem… critical.

It’s not direct confrontation, but I can feel it. Comments, small challenges, people questioning decisions in subtle ways.

I don’t know if this is just part of stepping into a bigger role, or if I’m actually doing something wrong.

I’ve worked hard to get here, but now it feels like I have to prove myself over and over again.

I’m starting to feel defensive, which isn’t how I want to show up.

So I guess my question is: is this something I just have to push through, or is there something I’m missing here?

– David

💬 Looking at the Bigger Picture

David is not at the beginning anymore.

He has already stepped into something bigger — but now comes:
👉 scrutiny
👉 expectation
👉 subtle competition

This is another expression of the Seven of Wands.

As a reader, your role is to help him understand:
👉 what this pressure actually means
👉 and how to respond without losing his footing

🎯 Your Exercise:

You draw The Seven of Wands for David.

Write a response that:

  • acknowledges the pressure he’s under
  • helps him understand what kind of phase this is
  • shows him how to hold his position without becoming reactive

Then compare it to my answer.

Exercise 2.2

Now we expand David’s reading:

The Seven of Wands + The Emperor + The Eight of Cups

Explore:

  • What kind of authority is he stepping into?
  • What should he engage with — and what should he step away from?
  • How does he maintain his position without burning out?

Write your answer, then compare it.

Closing the Seven of Wands Exercises

The Seven of Wands reminds us that holding something can be just as challenging as achieving it.

These exercises show how often people find themselves in positions where they feel tested, questioned, or pressured — even when they’ve done everything right to get there.

As a reader, your role is to help them understand what they’re standing on, and how to remain steady in it.
