The Lovers: Practical Tarot Exercises
Introduction
The Lovers is one of the most recognizable tarot cards — and also one of the most misunderstood. Many people think it only speaks about romance, but at its core, The Lovers is about alignment, choices, and commitments. It’s about the crossroads we face in love, career, or life: do we follow convenience, or do we choose what our heart knows is true?
Practicing with The Lovers will help you speak to both sides of this card: the tenderness of relationships, and the weight of important decisions.
How these exercises work
In every card’s practice section, you’ll find two fictional client emails — the kind of question real querents often send. Alongside it, I’ll give you a set card (or three-card combination) to use as a starting point.
Your task is to write a reply as if you were the professional tarot reader. When you’re ready, you can open the spoiler to see how I might have answered. My examples aren’t “the correct” interpretations (tarot doesn’t work that way), but they give you something to compare with so you can calibrate your style.
Of course, you don’t have to stick with my given cards. You can return to these emails anytime and:
- Pull a single random card,
- Try three random cards, or
- Lay out a full Celtic Cross —
…and then explore how the reading changes. The emails themselves become a reusable deck of practice prompts you can keep coming back to.
Exercise 1
📝 Fictional client email:
Hi, I’m Nadia. I’ve been seeing someone for almost a year now. I really like him, and I think he feels the same… but sometimes I’m not sure if we’re moving toward something serious or if it’s just casual for him. I don’t want to waste time if this isn’t going anywhere, but I also don’t want to scare him away by pushing too much. Can you tell me what the cards say?
💬 What’s happening here:
This is the Lovers in its most obvious role: love, relationships, and the question of commitment. The querent is asking: Are we aligned in this relationship, or not?
🎯 Your Exercise:
Imagine you’ve drawn The Lovers. Write a reply that speaks to Nadia’s question with warmth and clarity, showing how The Lovers frames her situation.

Exercise 1.2
Now imagine Nadia’s spread expands to three cards:
The Lovers + The Knight of Cups + The Ten of Pentacles.
How does this shift the story from “uncertain feelings” to “romantic potential with long-term grounding”?

Exercise 2
📧 Fictional Client Email — Derek
Hello,
I’m 29, and I’ve been offered two very different opportunities: one is a stable office job with good pay and benefits, but it doesn’t excite me. The other is a chance to move abroad and pursue a career in photography, which has always been my passion — but it’s uncertain and financially risky.
I feel torn between safety and adventure. Can the cards help me see which path is right?
Thanks,
Derek
💬 Looking at the Bigger Picture:
This is The Lovers in its other form: choice and decisions. Derek isn’t asking about romance — he’s asking which future to commit to. This card often shows up at crossroads like this.
🎯 Your Exercise:
Imagine you’ve drawn The Lovers. How would you answer Derek’s dilemma, balancing both options while honoring the spirit of the card?

Exercise 2.2
Now let’s expand Derek’s spread:
The Lovers + The Fool + The Eight of Pentacles.
Notice how these cards add layers: new beginnings, risk, and the importance of skill-building.

Closing the Lovers Exercises
That’s the end of our Lovers practice. Through these examples, you’ve seen how this card speaks both to the joy of connection and the weight of choice.
The Lovers reminds us that love is not just about attraction, and decisions are not just about logic — both are about choosing alignment with our values, our truth, and what we want to grow into.
Remember: you can always return to these fictional client emails as practice prompts. Pull a single card, or three random ones from your own deck, and see how the message shifts each time.
