Introduction
The Five of Wands is conflict — but not the kind that comes with clear rules or defined sides.
This is scattered tension. Competing opinions. Misunderstandings that build on each other. Situations where everyone is reacting, but no one is fully aligned.
It can show up as arguments, but just as often it appears as:
- frustration in communication
- feeling pulled in different directions
- or the sense that things are unnecessarily complicated
In these exercises, you’ll practice reading for moments where the issue isn’t one clear problem — but too many small ones happening at once.
Your role as a reader is to bring clarity into that noise without adding more of it.
Exercise 1
📝 Fictional client email:
Hi,
I don’t even know where to start because everything feels a bit all over the place right now.
I’ve been talking to someone for a while, and it’s not bad… but it’s also not easy. We get along, we have good conversations, but at the same time, there’s always something slightly off.
Sometimes it’s small things. Misunderstandings. Timing issues. One of us says something, and the other takes it the wrong way. Then we clear it up, and it’s fine again… until the next thing.
And lately, I’ve noticed that I’m starting to feel more irritated than excited.
It’s not like we’re fighting constantly, but it feels like we’re never fully in sync either.
I keep asking myself if this is just normal early-stage tension… or if this is a sign that we’re just not compatible.
I don’t want to overreact, but I also don’t want to ignore something that’s already showing up this clearly.
So I guess my question is… is this something that can settle, or am I trying to make something work that just naturally clashes?
– Nina
💬 Let’s look at what’s happening here:
Nina isn’t describing one big problem.
She’s describing accumulation.
Small misunderstandings. Repeated friction. A connection that never fully relaxes.
This is exactly where the Five of Wands lives.
As a reader, your role is not to pick sides or declare a winner — it’s to identify the pattern and help her understand what kind of situation she’s actually in.
🎯 Your Exercise:
For this reading, you draw The Five of Wands.
Write your response to Nina as if you were answering her professionally.
- Acknowledge the ongoing tension
- Help her understand what kind of conflict this is
- Don’t dramatize it, but don’t dismiss it either
When you’re ready, compare your answer to mine.

Exercise 1.2
Now we deepen Nina’s situation.
This time, the cards are:
The Five of Wands + The Seven of Swords + The Knight of Swords
Explore:
- Where is miscommunication coming from?
- Is there avoidance or defensiveness involved?
- Why does everything escalate so quickly?
Write your answer, then compare it to mine.

Exercise 2
📧 Fictional Client Email — Marco
Hey,
I’m kind of stuck in a situation at work and I’m not sure if I’m overreacting or if it’s actually as chaotic as it feels.
I work in a small team, and lately everything has been… tense.
It’s not like there’s one big argument. It’s more like constant small things. People talking over each other in meetings, unclear responsibilities, last-minute changes, and somehow everything ends up feeling rushed and disorganized.
Everyone seems frustrated, but no one is really addressing it directly.
I try to stay out of it, but it’s getting harder because it affects my work too. Things that should be simple take twice as long, and I feel like I’m constantly adjusting to other people’s confusion.
I don’t know if this is just a phase or if this is how things are going to be from now on.
Do I just deal with it, or is this something I should actually take seriously?
– Marco
💬 Looking at the Bigger Picture
Marco’s situation isn’t about personal conflict.
It’s about group energy.
The Five of Wands often appears in environments where:
👉 roles are unclear
👉 communication overlaps
👉 and tension spreads without a clear source
As a reader, your role is to help him understand:
👉 what kind of environment he’s in
👉 and how it affects him personally
🎯 Your Exercise:
You draw The Five of Wands for Marco.
Write a response that:
- acknowledges the chaotic environment
- helps him understand the pattern, not just the symptoms
- gives him clarity without overwhelming him
Then compare it to my answer.

Exercise 2.2
Now we expand Marco’s reading:
The Five of Wands + The Emperor + The Two of Pentacles
Explore:
- What is missing in this environment?
- How can structure be introduced?
- How does Marco personally navigate this?
Write your answer, then compare it.

Closing the Five of Wands Exercises
The Five of Wands reminds us that not all conflict is direct.
Sometimes it’s subtle, repetitive, and built from many small points of friction.
These exercises show how often people find themselves in situations where nothing is clearly “wrong” — and yet everything feels harder than it should.
As a reader, your role is to recognize that pattern and bring clarity into it.
