The Fool — Card 0
The Beginning of the Journey
In tarot, every story begins with The Fool — card number 0. This is the symbol of pure potential, untamed curiosity, and the beginning of a new spiritual cycle.
The Fool doesn’t plan, doesn’t overthink, and doesn’t look back. He steps forward into the unknown, full of naïve hope — unaware of the dangers ahead, but also unaware of how brightly he might shine. He doesn’t know what he doesn’t know yet — and in that ignorance, there’s power.
Some say this reflects what’s called the “Peak of Mount Stupid” — a moment when we feel most confident right before we realize how little we understand. But this is where every journey begins. It’s not a place of shame — it’s a sacred state of becoming.

🖼 Symbolism in My Deck
In my deck, The Fool is reimagined as a young traveler — maybe a student or hipster — standing at the train station with just a backpack and a dog by his side. He’s bought his ticket, but he has no idea what the journey will bring.
- He might get scammed.
- He might film something that goes viral and come home a millionaire.
- Or he might return quietly, forever changed by subtle moments along the way.
The destination is known — but the path, the transformation, and the outcome are not. That’s what makes him The Fool.
This card marks the start of a new cycle. A leap of faith. An openness to experience — unburdened by fear, ego, or the weight of knowing too much.

🔄 Reversed doesn’t mean “opposite” — it’s the same energy, just blocked, distorted, or turned inward. Think of it as the shadow side of the card, not its undoing.
🔍 Meaning — The Fool
The Fool marks the beginning of every spiritual journey. It’s the start of a new life cycle — a leap of faith into the unknown, guided by curiosity rather than certainty. In tarot, these cycles unfold across the 22 Major Arcana, representing spiritual phases that often span years. When the Fool appears, it signals that a new phase is beginning — and everything is still open.
At this point in the cycle, you haven’t yet learned the lessons ahead — and you may not even know there are lessons to be learned. This isn’t ignorance to be judged — it’s a sacred moment of openness. The Fool is fully present in the now. He doesn’t calculate risks. He doesn’t carry fear. He moves because something inside says, “It’s time.”
🌀 The Fool as a Spiritual Symbol
This card reminds us that truth is subjective. Experience is subjective. The Fool sees the world with wide eyes, untouched by cynicism. He believes in possibility — not because he’s foolish, but because he hasn’t yet been told what’s impossible. There’s power in that.
The Fool invites you to take risks, follow instincts, and move forward without knowing what comes next. That’s not recklessness — it’s trust. Trust in life. Trust in the self. Trust that even mistakes are part of the path.
In many decks, including my own, the Fool carries a bag or backpack — a reference to A.E. Waite’s idea that the Fool brings his past with him, even if he isn’t consciously aware of it. You may be starting something new, but you’re not starting empty. Your soul carries wisdom, whether or not you realize it.
🃏 Wildcard Energy
The Fool can also act like a joker in a deck of playing cards — an unexpected opportunity, a sudden twist, or a loophole out of a situation. It might suggest that, at this stage, you can bend the rules a little. Or that something unexpected will shift the course entirely.
Like the court jester, the Fool has permission to speak truth without consequence. He may be underestimated — but he sees things others don’t. In this way, the Fool represents freedom through detachment. Sometimes, it’s only when we stop taking things so seriously that we see clearly.
🔄 Reversed Meaning
When reversed, the Fool doesn’t necessarily mean you’re not starting something new — rather, it asks how wisely you’re approaching the opportunity.
- Are you acting impulsively?
- Trusting someone without checking the facts?
- Chasing a dream that isn’t grounded in reality?
The reversed Fool may warn of carelessness, immaturity, or falling for illusions. It can be a red flag in situations where enthusiasm has blinded you — like jumping into a pyramid scheme or romantic fantasy without thinking twice.
But in other cases, the reversed Fool may reflect hesitation: being too cautious, too fearful, too grown-up to take the leap. An opportunity is present — but fear of looking foolish may be holding you back.
In both cases, the card invites clarity and alignment.
🧠 Pro Tip: Use a Clarification Deck
If you’re unsure how to interpret the Fool reversed — recklessness or missed opportunity? — this is a good time to pull a clarification card. Ask:
“What if I take this leap?”
“What if I don’t?”
Your second deck (or a clarifying draw) will reveal whether you’re being called to take a risk or to slow down. The Fool teaches us that context is everything.
🛠 Practical Use — The Fool in Readings
Knowing a card’s core meaning is one thing — but real-life readings are rarely that tidy. A card like The Fool can show up in different areas of life and take on a range of tones depending on context, question, and card placement.
Here’s how to read The Fool in practical spreads:
🌿 In Career & Work Questions
The Fool often signals a new role, project, or path — especially one you’re not fully trained for yet.
It reflects excitement, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn — but also a lack of experience.
It doesn’t say whether this will go well or badly — only that it will be new.
You’ll need other cards (or a clarification draw) to determine the outcome. If you’re using two decks, this is a great moment to ask:
“What happens if I take this leap?”
🧠 In Self-Reflection & Spiritual Growth
Here, The Fool may reflect either:
- Childlike openness and spiritual awakening
- Or naivety and inexperience in the area you’re asking about
The key is your attitude: are you eager to learn and grow, or stumbling blindly?
Either way, The Fool encourages curiosity, humility, and a sense of wonder.
💞 In Relationship Spreads
The Fool can be tricky in matters of the heart. It may indicate:
- A light, playful connection — no pressure, just joy
- Or naïve expectations, especially in early-stage relationships
For example, if you’re asking about a new partner and pull The Fool, it might mean you’re being overly idealistic — or that the connection is spontaneous and emotionally free. You’ll need a clarifier to tell the difference. (The Three of Cups, for instance, might suggest you’re not the only person involved.)
Don’t overdraw — just pull one clarification card and trust your first impression.
🧭 In Spread Positions
Here’s how The Fool behaves in common spread positions:
- Subconscious / Hidden Influence
→ You’re craving new experiences, or resisting commitment
→ You may be acting more impulsively than you realize - How They See You
→ They may view you as carefree, spontaneous… or flaky
→ You’re seen as fun — but perhaps not as “serious relationship” material - Advice / What to Do
→ A new path is unfolding — walk it with openness
→ Ask questions, stay humble, be willing to learn
→ This is not a moment for ego — it’s a moment for growth
🃏 Cultural Note: The Sacred Clown
In the Orisha Tarot, The Fool is represented by Eshu — a sacred trickster and opener of roads. He carries Mercury energy, just like Papa Legba in Vodou. While these systems differ from Rider-Waite-Smith, the core symbolism overlaps beautifully:
→ The Fool is not just a wanderer. He is the divine jester who opens paths and plays with fate.
This gives the card an even deeper meaning: sometimes the chaos at the beginning is sacred.
♃ Astrological Correspondences — The Fool
The Fool is most often associated with Uranus, the planet of disruption, freedom, and awakening. Uranus governs unexpected events, sudden change, rebellion, and originality — all core themes of this card. When The Fool appears, life may be breaking from tradition, bending the rules, or inviting you to do something radically different.
There’s also a strong influence of Mercury here — quick thinking, curiosity, adaptability, and movement. Mercury governs travelers, learners, and tricksters alike, echoing the Fool’s archetype as the eternal student or sacred clown. He moves lightly, gathers information, and often speaks uncomfortable truths without intending harm.
Some readers also associate Neptune with The Fool — a planet tied to dreams, illusions, and the dissolving of boundaries. This adds a spiritual, even mystical layer: The Fool can represent an unfiltered connection to divine flow, or the blind faith that precedes spiritual awakening. But it can also speak to naivety or confusion when boundaries are unclear.
🜁 Element: Air
Like Mercury and Uranus, The Fool carries Air energy — ideas, thoughts, words, inspiration, and movement. Air moves freely and changes shape. It doesn’t cling, and neither does The Fool.
🧠 Together, these planetary influences reveal why The Fool is unpredictable, electric, and full of potential — but also why he can walk off a cliff without realizing it.
He isn’t stupid — just untethered.
