Pick a Pile: What Are You Protecting by Procrastinating?
We often treat procrastination as though it’s a character flaw. We tell ourselves we’re lazy. Undisciplined. Unmotivated.
If we could just become more productive, everything would finally fall into place.
But what if procrastination isn’t always the problem? What if it’s a form of protection?
Sometimes we delay sending the application because we’re afraid of being rejected. Sometimes we postpone starting because beginning means we’ll eventually have to find out whether we’re good enough. Sometimes we avoid finishing because finishing changes things. It asks us to let go of the version of ourselves that’s still “working on it” and become the person who has actually done it.
Our minds are remarkably creative when they’re trying to keep us safe. The trouble is, they don’t always know the difference between protecting our hearts and keeping our lives small.
That’s what this Pick-A-Pile reading is about.
We’re going to explore what your procrastination may be quietly protecting, the fear or hope hidden beneath the delay, and the gentle message your heart might need before it’s finally ready to take the next step.
Take a moment to look at the piles in front of you and notice which one draws your attention first. Don’t overthink it. Sometimes the thing we’ve been avoiding has already been patiently waiting for us to look at it with kindness instead of criticism.

Pile 1 – The Emperor
What you are protecting by procrastinating is your sense of order.
At first, that might sound surprising. Most people assume procrastination happens because somebody lacks discipline. The Emperor suggests almost the opposite.
When I look at this card, I don’t see someone who struggles with structure. I see someone who depends on it.
You like knowing what your week looks like. You have routines that work, systems you’ve carefully built, and a rhythm that helps you feel calm and in control. Once everything has found its place, life becomes much easier to navigate.
Then something arrives that doesn’t fit. A new project. An unexpected responsibility. An opportunity you weren’t planning for.
Suddenly, the task itself isn’t the biggest challenge. The challenge is that your entire structure has to move to make room for it.
That’s the part your mind quietly resists. Because changing one thing often means changing ten others. You have to rethink your schedule. Rearrange your priorities. Find a new routine. Shift everything you’ve already organized so carefully. That’s when procrastination appears. Because your mind keeps hoping the work will somehow fit into your existing system without asking you to redesign it.
The Emperor reminds me of someone standing in front of a perfectly organized bookshelf with one new book in their hands. The problem isn’t finding room for one more book. The problem is that making room for it means every shelf suddenly needs to move. That’s exactly what certain tasks feel like to you.
I also have the feeling that once you’ve restructured your life, the procrastination often disappears almost overnight. The project that felt impossible on Monday suddenly flows effortlessly on Wednesday because you’ve finally figured out where it belongs. That’s a fascinating pattern. Your procrastination isn’t saying, “I don’t want to do this.” It’s saying, “I don’t know where this fits yet.” Those are two completely different messages. Perhaps that’s what your heart is trying to show you today.
Instead of asking yourself, “Why can’t I just get started?” Try asking, “What would need to change in my routine for this to have a natural place?”
The answer might be surprisingly simple. Because I don’t think you’re avoiding the work. You’re protecting the structure that makes you feel grounded. And maybe the next chapter doesn’t require throwing that structure away. Maybe it simply asks you to build one more room onto the house you’ve already created. 🏛️
Pile 2 (green coffee mug)
Pile 2 – The Sun
What you are protecting by procrastinating is your joy.
That may sound like an unusual answer. We’re often told that procrastination keeps us away from happiness. The Sun tells a different story.
“What if some of the things you’re avoiding aren’t actually good for you?”
When I look at this card, I don’t see someone who’s trying to escape responsibility. I see someone with surprisingly good instincts about what drains them and what helps them come alive.
The difficult part is that we don’t always listen to those instincts. Sometimes we tell ourselves, “I should do this.”, “I have to do this.”, “Everyone expects me to do this.” So we keep putting it off. Because a little voice inside us is constantly asking, “Are you sure this is the right thing to do?”
Imagine there’s a phone call you’ve been avoiding for weeks. You’ve told yourself you’ll make it tomorrow. Then tomorrow becomes next week. Then next month. Everyone around you says, “Just get it over with.” But deep down, you already know that conversation will leave you feeling devastated. You know it won’t bring closure. It won’t solve the problem. It’ll simply reopen a wound that’s finally beginning to heal.
Perhaps the procrastination isn’t the enemy. Perhaps it’s your heart gently trying to protect your peace. Or maybe you’ve been postponing saying yes to something because every part of you senses it would fill your calendar while emptying your spirit.
Again… That isn’t always laziness. Sometimes it’s wisdom that hasn’t yet found the courage to speak clearly.
The Sun reminds us that your energy is precious. Not every invitation deserves it. Not every obligation deserves it. Not every expectation deserves it.
I also think this card asks you to become curious about the difference between healthy resistance and fearful resistance. There are moments when procrastination is protecting you from growth, and there are moments when it’s protecting you from unnecessary pain.
Learning the difference changes everything.
The beautiful thing about the Sun is that it trusts clarity.
Once something truly belongs in your life, your energy usually knows it. You stop forcing yourself forward because you’re no longer fighting your own heart. The path feels lighter. The next step feels obvious.
Perhaps that’s the message waiting for you today. Instead of asking, “Why am I avoiding this?” Try asking, “Is my heart asking for courage… or is it asking for freedom?” Those are very different questions. And I have a feeling your intuition already knows the answer.
Your procrastination isn’t always trying to keep you from living. Sometimes it’s quietly protecting the joy that makes life worth living in the first place. ☀️💛
Pile 3 (purple coffee mug)
Pile 3 – Six of Pentacles
What you are protecting by procrastinating the image of being the person who always has time.
The Six of Pentacles has such a generous heart. When somebody needs help, your first instinct isn’t usually, “Can I fit this into my week?” It’s, “Of course I’ll help.” And that’s beautiful.
The problem is that your heart sometimes makes promises before your calendar has had a chance to speak.
When I look at this card, I don’t think you procrastinate because you don’t care. I think you procrastinate because you’ve quietly given your time away to so many different people that there isn’t much left for yourself.
You tell someone you’ll help them move next weekend. You agree to look over a friend’s résumé. You promise your sister you’ll come by. You say yes to another favor at work. You still have your own project sitting on the kitchen table. You genuinely believe you’ll find the time.
Then reality arrives. There are only twenty-four hours in a day. Suddenly, everything starts moving backwards. The email waits another day. The project stays untouched. The phone call gets postponed. Because you’ve accidentally spent tomorrow before tomorrow even began.
I also think there’s something deeper happening. The task you’re avoiding isn’t always the task itself.
Sometimes you’re avoiding the moment you’ll have to admit, “I can’t do everything.”
That’s a difficult sentence for someone with a generous heart. You like being dependable. You like making life easier for the people you love.
You enjoy giving your time, your attention, your energy. The Six of Pentacles reminds us that generosity is a beautiful gift.
But time is a gift too. Once it’s given away, you can’t get it back.
Perhaps that’s what your procrastination has been trying to tell you. Not, “Stop helping people.” But, “Start being as generous with your own time as you are with everyone else’s.” Because I have a feeling you’re protecting more than your schedule. You’re protecting the version of yourself that wants nobody to leave disappointed.
The truth is, though, every time you promise more than one person can realistically give, somebody ends up waiting. Very often… that somebody is you. And maybe that’s the gentle invitation of this card. Not to become less kind. Simply to remember that your own dreams deserve a place in your calendar too. 🤍
