🃏 Madame Vega’s Guide to the Tarot
Chapter 0 — Introduction
Welcome to a different kind of tarot course — one that honors both structure and soul.
🔮 A Few Things to Know Before You Begin:
- You don’t need the “perfect” deck to start.
Tarot is more accessible than ever. Decks come in endless designs and usually cost around €20–25. Don’t get too caught up in whether the included guidebook is any good — many aren’t. The right deck is the one you feel connected to. Look for one whose imagery speaks to you and feels energetically safe or neutral. - Yes, you can use other decks too.
While this course uses the Rider-Waite-Smith system (since most decks are based on it), the tips and insights here can apply to other systems like the Thoth or Orisha Tarot. You can even read with UNO cards, playing cards, or traditional oracles if you know how to work with elemental energies. (No joke — you’ll learn how later.) - Not all decks feel the same — and that matters.
Some decks are created with deep, intentional energy. Others are trend-driven or purely artistic. As you learn, you’ll begin to sense what a deck “carries” energetically. You want to read with tools that support you, not sabotage your focus or intuition. - Cardstock, coating, and size make a difference.
Shuffling is a big part of the ritual. Cheap plastic decks or overly thick cardstock can be frustrating. U.S. Games Systems decks are often a reliable starting point — thoughtfully designed and built to last.
🧩 Two-Deck Reading Tip
One deck is fine, but two is often better.
Try pairing a tarot deck with a smaller oracle deck for clarity. For example: do your full tarot spread first, then pull an oracle card to help interpret or confirm your reading. This is especially helpful when you’re unsure what the cards are trying to tell you.
It works the other way too: two tarot decks can be used together. The key is to feel into the symbolism and let your intuition make the call. Sometimes all you need is one more card to unlock the message.
📚 How This Course Is Structured
This is a progressive course — each chapter builds on the last.
We’ll start with the structure of the tarot deck itself (that’s up next), then move into the suits, the Majors, and finally the individual card meanings. Every card comes with:
- Interpretations (upright + reversed)
- Keywords
- Correspondences
- A reflection prompt
- A solo or group practice idea
- And sometimes: a little behind-the-scenes insight from the tarot table
Throughout this course, I’ll be using my own tarot deck — a custom-designed digital deck I created specifically for learning and intuitive recall.
Each image was crafted with intention: to make the card’s energy clear at a glance and to help you remember the meaning without needing a guidebook. There’s no physical version of the deck yet (maybe someday!), but you’ll see the images throughout the lessons — and I encourage you to use them as visual anchors while you learn.
You’ll also get tips on choosing decks, improving your accuracy, meditating with the cards, keeping a reading journal, and troubleshooting tricky spreads.
✨ A Note on Learning Tarot
This path is part knowledge, part practice, part magic.
You’ll learn faster and more meaningfully if you combine the theory in this guide with real readings — even if they’re just for yourself at first. Keep a journal. Take photos. Record voice notes. Go back later and reflect on your past readings. You’ll be amazed at the progress.
When you’re ready, start reading for others. Offer a few free practice readings in safe spaces like Discord groups, tarot forums, or subreddits. Don’t skip feedback — that’s where the real growth happens.
And remember: the cards speak to everyone differently.
What matters is that you find your own rhythm, your own understanding, and your own voice.
🧠 Pro Tip for Beginners
Don’t stress about knowing everything at once.
Start by connecting with one card at a time. Meditate on it. Let the imagery sink in. And above all: let it speak to you. That’s the beginning of true mastery — not the book, not the memorization, but the relationship.
📍 Next Up:
In Chapter 1, we’ll break down the structure of the tarot into six easy-to-understand groups. Once you’ve got this framework in your mind, reading becomes much, much easier.
Let’s begin.
